RAMALLAH, Friday, May 10, 2024 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the overwhelming vote and international consensus in the United Nations General Assembly affirming the right of the State of Palestine to full UN membership and additional privileges in the UN and its various institutions and bodies.
In a press release, the Ministry stressed that this vote confirms that Palestine meets all the requirements set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, particularly Article 4, thus affirming its eligibility for full membership in the United Nations.
The vote passed overwhelmingly with 143 countries in favor, nine against and 25 abstained.
The ministry stressed that today’s vote is a clear message by the international community of the natural, legal, and historical right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, their aspirations for liberation and independence and the right to live on their land in security and peace like other peoples of the world.
The ministry considered this move as part of efforts to protect the two-state solution by ending the colonial occupation and the Israeli apartheid regime and achieving peace and stability in the region.
It emphasized that strengthening Palestine’s status at the United Nations is promoting peace and solutions based on multilateral diplomacy, in accordance with international law and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to the countries who voted in favor of the resolution, renewing its call to the countries that support the two-state solution and the security and stability of the region to the necessity of bilateral recognition of the State of Palestine.
It also urged the countries that voted against the resolution and those that abstained to reconsider their positions and stand on the right track of truth, justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle to realize their full legitimate rights, particularly the right to self-determination, their right to an independent state and the right of refugees to return to their homeland as stipulated by General Assembly resolution 194.
