Israeli forces stationed at the northern border of the Gaza Strip opened fire at a Palestinian farmer working on his land in Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza, on Sunday afternoon, resulting in a gunshot wound in his head.

The injured farmer was taken to the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, where his wound was described as mild.

Local sources reported that Israeli soldiers stationed at the border fired multiple rounds at the farmer as he attempted to plow his agricultural land in Beit Lahia.

Palestinian farmers with lands close to the militarized border with Israel are frequently targeted by Israeli forces. In addition the Israeli military frequently invades the areas near the border and razes the Palestinian farmland, destroying crops planted there for “security reasons”.

Palestinians say that the Israeli practices are meant to discourage them from working their land, and to disrupt the Palestinian economy in an attempt to further impoverish the besieged population of the Gaza Strip.
