The family of injured prisoner, Ahmed Abu Haija, 21 years old, called upon the International and the local human rights organizations and the Red Cross to pressure Israel to release their son. Abu Haija is in serious medical condition, which will probably require several surgeries and intensive care.
An Israeli soldier shot Abu Haija with a Dumdum bullet in Jenin on September 15, 2002. Dumdum bullets are prohibited by International law.
“The bullet came through his lower jaw and exploded in a neural section in right side of the neck. This made a big hole in the neck and fragments in the upper part spinal cord and the right lung, parts of which have been taken out in surgery. This also caused some damage to some nerves that paralyzed his right arm,“ his father said. He added, “The Israeli Authorities refused to release him despite his terrible condition and renewed his administrative detention for three more months. He is now in Reiut Ledilyahu Clinic in Tel Aviv with lots of guards.â€Â
The Israeli Authorities wanted to move him to the hospital in Al-Ramleh prison. However, the doctor there refused and warned against doing so saying that this is very dangerous due to the severity of his case.
