Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative called for comprehensive reforms for the Palestinian security forces in order to end the state of lawlessness in the Palestinian territories.

Speaking at a press conference in Gaza, Barghouthi called to implement the rule of law and to ensure an independent judicial system stressing that the only way to end the current crisis the Palestinian people are facing is to reform the political system through free and democratic parliamentary elections.

Palestinians are expected to go to the ballot stations on January 25, 2006 to elect new lawmakers.

‘It is necessary to find mechanism that would guarantee honest and democratic elections,’ Barghouthi said.

Barghouthi stressed that the reforms on the security forces must ensure that these forces do not interfere with the free press and the economic activities, pointing that there will be no stability if the Palestinian Authority does not reform itself first.

He also called the PA to launch a campaign that would ‘expose the Israeli measures against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to the international community,’ and added that the Arab and international media are not transmitting sufficient information about Israeli violations of Human Rights in Palestine.
