An Israeli military source reported, on Thursday evening, that Palestinian resistance fired homemade shells at an area which is only 2km away from Ashkelon, in addition to firing several shells which detonated in the Western Negev.

The source stated that this is not the first time that homemade shells manage to reach the coastal area between Ashkelon and the northern Gaza Strip.

Artillery units of the Israeli army fired several shells at Palestinian targets in northern Gaza in retaliation to the homemade shells, army source said.

Meanwhile, Ashkelon Mayor Roni Mehatzri said that Israel must act in order to counter the homemade shells and the groups that fire them.

“We must not be dismissive of this situation”, he added..

Recently, the Ashkelon municipality installed the “Red Dawn” early warning system, but did not operate it yet. This is the same system which is operating in Sderot to provide residents with warning of incoming rocket, he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Palestinian resistance fired three Qassam homemade shells and one mortar shell at Israeli targets; one shell made it across the border into the Israeli territory, while another shell hit a Palestinian home in Beit Hanoun, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
