Palestinians marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba on Tuesday with a central march and public gathering in Ramallah at 11:30 a.m., as part of nationwide events held under the slogan: “We Will Not Leave… Our Roots Are Deeper Than Your Destruction.”
The activities were organized by the National Committee for the Commemoration of the Nakba, with broad official and popular participation.
The committee said the events reaffirm Palestinians’ commitment to their national rights, foremost among them the right of return for refugees displaced in 1948.
This year’s commemorations take place during what Palestinian institutions describe as one of the most dangerous periods since the original Nakba, amid the genocide in the Gaza Strip, continued attacks on refugee camps in the northern West Bank, and political efforts to undermine the status of Palestinian refugees and dismantle the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides services to millions of refugees across the region.
Several districts had already launched their commemorations on Monday. Nablus in the northern West Bank, Tulkarem in the northwestern West Bank, Salfit in the central West Bank, and Tubas in the northeastern West Bank all held official and popular events marking the anniversary.
Commemorations will continue in the Gaza Strip with a national “March of Return” scheduled for May 11 in the Khan Younis refugee camp, near the Youth Club of Khan Younis.
Organizers said the event will carry messages affirming the right of return and rejecting forced displacement and resettlement.
Palestinian refugee communities in the diaspora—including camps in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as Palestinian communities across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa—are also preparing political and popular events.
These include marches, community programs, and sit‑ins in front of United Nations offices and international institutions to emphasize that, in the words of organizers, “there can be no justice without accountability.”
