Sources close to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon hinted Friday that the premier is considering another unilateral disengagement plan through which major settlement blocks will be annexed together with evacuating isolated west bank settlements.
According to Israeli newspaper Yodout Ahranot, Sharon, based on assessment that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is collapsing, and won’t be able to fulfill the road map obligations, is considering a second unilateral step in the West Bank as ‘there will be no Palestinian partner’
The newspaper also said that Sharon expects the United States to release Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard as a gift to Sharon ahead of the implementation of the disengagement plan.
Pollard is serving a life term sentence in American jails for treason charges. He already served 20 years inside jails.
In his latest visit to the United States, Sharon failed to convince U.S. President George Bush that Abbas was on the verge of collapsing, and that there was a need to plan for the post-Abbas era.
Local commentators believe that Sharon aides are flying test balloons to increase the pressure on Abbas to abandon his plan to absorb militants and use instead military means to curb them.
