According to data collect by the Department of Planning and Census at the Ministry of Detainees and Liberated, 177 Palestinian detainees died in Israeli prisons since 1967, 69 of them died of torture.
The data revealed that 37 detainees died of medical neglect, 70 died during interrogation and torture, 55 detainees died over the last four and a half years.
The last detainee who died in detention was Rasem Suleiman Ghneimat, from Kafer Malik near Ramallah, died January 27, 2005, after fire broke out in Majeddo detention, detention facilities lacks first aid materials or fire distinguishing tools.
Israel arrested since 1967, 650.000 residents, 380.000 between the period of 1967-1987, after the beginning of the first Intifada in 1987 until 2004 Israeli arrested more than 200.000 Palestinians.
After the Oslo agreement Israel released thousands of detainees, and reduced the number of arrests, also several prisons became under the Palestinian control such as Gaza Central Prison, Ansar 2 in Gaza, Jneid in Nablus, and Hebron prison in Hebron.
Before the outbreak of the Intifada in September 28, 2000, 1150 detainees were still imprisoned in Israeli detentions and prisons, currently there are 640 detainees who were arrested before the Intifada, 180 among them from the Gaza Strip, 329 from the West Bank, 131 from Jerusalem and Arab residents of Israel, in addition to prisoners from Arabic countries, like Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt.
During Al-Aqsa Intifada, Israel arrested thousands of Palestinians, and assassinated dozens of activists, which also resulted in killing civilians, including children.
The widest arrest campaign was carried out March and April 2002, Israeli army arrested during this period more than 5000 residents from the West Bank and the Gaza strip.
The arrests were mainly conducted after Israel invaded the Palestinian cities, villages and refuge camps using tanks, helicopters and armored vehicles.
These invasions and military operations made thousands of residents homeless, after leveling and shelling their homes and residential compounds, especially in the Gaza Strip.
Ansar 3 detention camp in the Negev desert was reopened in April 2002, after it was closed after the first Intifada, similar to Ansar Ofer in Ramallah, and Al-Damoun Prison in Haifa and other prisons, Ansar 3 is totally controlled by the Israel army.
Number of arrests conducted during the period between September 28, 2000 and March 28, 2005 arrived to 35000, currently there are 6800 detainees who are still in detention, in addition to 640 detainees who were arrested before the Intifada, which makes the total number of detainees currently in detention 7400 detainees, 10% are from the Gaza Strip, and 82% from the West Bank, and 8% from Jerusalem, Arab residents of Israel and from Arab countries.
Also, Israel arrested a large number of residents as a means to pressure their relatives; parents sisters and brothers of resistance fighters were arrested and interrogated, which is a direct violation of the international law.
Comparing the arrests in the first Intifada which broke out in 1987, and Al-Aqsa Intifada, Israel conducted 200.000 arrests during the first Intifada “nearly 30000 per yearâ€Â, and 35.000 during Al-Aqsa Intifada, “nearly 35000 arrests per yearâ€Â.
