A non-governmental conference committee meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling world nations to increase pressure on Israel to put an end to the occupation.

The resolution warned that sanctions should be considered ‘if Israel does not comply”, calling for immediate steps for economic divestment from Israel.

The NGOs decided to put pressure on governments to meticulously enforce UN decisions concerning Palestinian rights, calling world nations to stand for their obligations and provide protection to Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

The NGO’s resolution was announced one day ahead of the UN General Assembly’s 59th session.

The NGOs’ diplomatic move was also seen as a special effort to influence UN debates on Middle East issues.

The NGO council is considered a pivotal international organization with significant influence in the UN.

UN Palestinian representatives are planning to submit a draft resolution on the West Bank separation wall to the General Assembly that would include the threat of sanctions against Israel.
