Arab member of Knesset, Abdul Malek Dahamsha called on Israeli authorities and Israeli defense minister, Shaul Mofaz, to improve the conditions of prisoners in the Nafha detention facility following his latest visit to the Israeli facility.
During his visit, the prisoners complained to Dahamsha that prison authorities create numerous obstacles for their families. Many have not been allowed visits from their families for five years. Others have only seen their families once or twice over the past five years.
Those families who are given permission to visit their incarcerated sons face a number of hindrances along the way, especially those who come from the northern West Bank. They are forced to leave their homes before dawn and do not visit with their sons until the evening hours, which means they do not return home before midnight.
In this respect, Dahamsha called for placing detainees from the northern West Bank in detention facilities which are close to their towns so as to alleviate the pressure on their families.
He also called for allocating an addition day for family visits so that all the families could finish with the visits early and not have to stay until midnight to see their detained family members.
Dahamsha also called on the Israeli public security minister to release administrative detainee Fayeq Mohammed Abu Adi from Ramallah, who has been detained in the Ayalon facility since May 2, 2005 after completing his sentence.
However, Israeli authorities disregarded the request. “At least let him and three other administrative detainees be transferred to the Ansar Prison so he could be with his brother Abdul-Nasser, who is also an administrative detainee,” said Dahamsha. There are already approximately 500 administrative prisoners in Ansar Prison.
Abu Adi also has two other detained brothers besides Abdul-Nasser, Riyadh and Abdul- Halim are both in the Beer Sheva detention facility.
