Head of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Dr. Aziz Dweik, called on European Parliamentarians to hold an international campaign against the illegal Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip and to support the Palestinian people and their elected leadership. The statements of Dweik came during a Wednesday meeting between a number of Islamic parliamentarians in the West Bank and visiting European Parliamentarians.
He said that such activities would boost the relation between the Palestinian people and the European community.
The PLC head told the EU legislators that the Israeli kidnappings of elected officials and the ongoing violations against the Palestinian people are obstructing the daily lives of the people.
The meeting between Dr. Dweik and seven Palestinians legislators of the Hamas movement, and the 12 European parliamentarians took place in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.
The talks focused on Palestinian national reconciliation, the obstructed peace talks, the siege on Gaza and the political arrests conducted by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank against leaders, members and supporters of the Hamas movement.
Legislator Dr. Omar Abdul-Raziq, said that the political arrests, and firing Hamas supporters from their jobs in the West Bank, in addition to shutting down facilities and societies run by the movement are obstructing the efforts to achieve national reconciliation.
It is worth mentioning that the Israeli Authorities prevented, Wednesday, the EU parliamentary delegation from entering the Gaza Strip.
The visiting officials said that their trip to Gaza was approved by the Israeli
Authorities but the approval was rescinded after the EU Council expressed support to establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, and demanded an end to illegal Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem.
