In a meeting with a Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Prime Minister of the deposed government of Gaza, Ismail Haniyya, stated on Thursday, that his government has a ‘moral and national commitment’ to all Palestinian Christians, the Maan reported.Haniyya extended a hand to the Palestinian Christian community and said that to overcome the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, internal unity among the Palestinians is very important, ‘especially with our Christian brothers who are sharing our pain and hope.’
He also addressed Palestinian Muslims on the occasion of the Eid Al-Adha, an important feast of the Muslim calendar, which is being celebrated these days and commemorates Ibraham’s (Abraham) obedience to God by sacrificing his son, who is considered Ismael for Muslims.
According to the Koran, Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son when a voice stopped the act and allowed him to sacrifice a sheep instead.
The feast re-enacts this event by sacrificing a cow or sheep. Muslim families eat about a third of the meal and donate the rest to relatives and the poor.
