UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, stated that he is deeply concerned regarding a new Israeli plan to construct and expand its illegal settlements in Jerusalem, the Maan News Agency reported. In his statement, the UN Chief stated that “this plan is not acceptable, especially amidst the maximum efforts that are being carried out to ensure the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

He added that the plan contradicts the most recent statement of the Quartet Committee, in which it urged both Israel and the Palestinians ‘to refrain from provocative moves’.

Ban Ki-moon further stated that Israel’s construction and expansion of settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank violates the International Law, adding that Israel is also violating its own obligations to the Road Map Peace Plan.

All Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, including those in occupied East Jerusalem, violate the International Law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.
