Ma’an News Agency has reported on Monday that Dr. Nabil Shaath, a member of the Central Committee of Fatah, met separately the British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hugo Swire, and the Norwegian envoy to the peace process, both on Sunday.Shaath reviewed the political situation in Israel/Palestine and in the Arab region, stressing that Israeli policies show that the government is not serious about reaching a just solution based on international law. The State of Israel continues to confiscate Palestinian land, to change the facts on the ground, the so-called ‘Judaisation’ of Jerusalem, and the siege of Gaza.
Shaath also tackled the issue of prisoners and the serious violations they are exposed to in Israeli prisons. In particular, the procedure of administrative detention and and the prevention of visits are against international conventions.
Shaath emphasized the Palestinian leadership’s determination to go to the United Nations in order to establish the rights of the Palestinian people to their lands and holy places, to continue peaceful popular resistance, and to expand its scope to include various villages and towns affected by settlement expansion and the Separation Wall.
Shaath stressed the need for the international community to take a critical position to force Israel to accept Palestinian demands to stop settlement expansion which is leading to the destruction of the possibility of a two-state solution.
