Israeli artillery shelled several Palestinian targets in the northern part of the Gaza Strip; Israeli military sources claimed that the shelled areas were used areas to fire homemade shells at the Israeli Negev town of Sderot.
According to Israeli military source, military warplanes broke the sound barrier over the Gaza Strip following the shelling, but the planes fired no additional missiles.
A Palestinian security source in Gaza reported that at least three missiles were fired at the Bedouin village area, in Beit Lahia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip; no injuries were reported as the missiles detonated in open areas close to the village.
Al Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic, Jihad stated that firing the homemade shells at Sderot comes in retaliation to the assassination of one of its leaders in the West Bank city of Tulkarem.
Earlier on Monday, Israeli planes dropped leaflets over Beit Hanoun calling the residents to leave their homes especially in the areas which are in the range of military shells.
Also on Monday, soldiers closed on Monday at night, the Erez and Karni crossings which link the Gaza Strip with Israel.
