The News Cast
Three Palestinians were reported injured by Israeli troops on Tuesday after having been detained in the northern Gaza Strip town of Biet Lahyia.
A number of Israeli tanks stormed the evacuated settlement of Doghet and opened fire at Palestinian workers injuring three of them, witnesses reported.
Troops then detained the three men and took them to an unknown location. Workers said that one of the three injured men may have been killed by the army fire; the Israeli military issued no report about the incident.
Doghet settlement in the gaza strip was evacuated during the Israeli disengagement plan in 2005. Palestinian workers use this area to salvage scrap metal and other materials for sale. Last week Israeli troops detained 10 workers from the same area. Some of the workers were injured, local sources reported
Elsewhere a Palestinian Marshal Court in Nablus city, southern West Bank, sentenced a Palestinian Journalist to 18 months in jail. Tarik Abu Zaid, aged 37, was charged with working for AL Aqsa TV, a Palestinian satellite channel based in the Gaza Strip, the Palestine Information center reported.
Al Aqsa TV is run by the Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian President of Fatah, Mahmoud Abbas outlawed Hamas and its organizations in the West Bank after the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2006.
Abu Zaid started his journalism career 13 years ago as a writer and cartoonist; he had been detained by the Israeli military a number of times. Three months ago the Palestinian Secret Service also arrested Abu Zaid for being a correspondent for AL Aqsa TV, according to the Palestine Information center.
Also in the West Bank, two Palestinian civilians were detained by Israeli soldiers, while other troops conducted a training exercise on Tuesday. According to Palestinian sources the two men were taken by Israeli troops during house searches in a southern West Bank village on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops conducted an arial insertion exercise Tuesday morning above Palestinian villages near the northern West Bank city of Jenin. Witnesses said that troops were deployed around the village’s farm lands, and later soldiers erected a checkpoint to search cars, no arrests were reported.
