The News Cast
Israeli navy vessels attacked on Tuesday Palestinian fishermen boats near Gaza shoreline. Local sources said the navy opened fire at fishing boats damaging some of them, but reported no injuries among fishermen.
Late on Monday night Israeli navy forces landed at Gaza city shore and left shortly after. The Israeli navy enforces a tight siege on the Gaza-based fishermen and frequently attack their boats while fishing, local sources said.
Staying in Gaza, a Palestinian worker was killed and two others injured late Monday night during separate tunnel accidents at the southern Gaza Strip boarders with Egypt.
Mohamed Abu Sha’er, aged 20, was killed when a tunnel collapsed while he was inside. Two other workers were injured when another tunnel collapsed, local sources reported Tuesday. Abu Sha’er’s death brings the number of Palestinian workers killed in tunnel accidents to 143 since June of 2007.
Since Israel tightened its crippling siege on the Gaza Strip started in June 2007; the tunnels became the source of much needed supplies to the 1.5 million Palestinians living in the coastal enclave.
In Jerusalem, Israeli police forcefully dispersed a number of Palestinian youth to demonstrate in the city to commemorate the 62 anniversary of what Palestinians call “Nakba Day”and Israelis call “Independence Day”. Palestinian youth arrived near the Hebrew University carrying Palestinian and black flags, however, the police forced them back into the busses.
Also in the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted on Tuesday dozens of olive trees owned by Palestinian farmers form the village of Qaryut near Nablus city, northern West Bank.
Famers said the settlers arrived at lands owned by villagers then uprooted near 250 young olive trees, and took them away. The mayor of the village told reporters that the settlers gathered the uprooted olive tree near the village and set it on fire.
