An Egyptian man was killed Tuesday by Israeli troops while attempting to cross into Israel. Israeli sources report that a group of fifteen men were seen attempting to cross the Egypt-Israel border, and Israeli troops opened fire on the group. The Israeli military told reporters with the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz that the men were smugglers trying to bring guns into Israel. A military spokesperson reported that the Israeli soldiers stationed along the border shouted at the men to stop, and when they did not, they began to open fire on the Egyptians.
The spokesperson also stated that someone in the group of Egyptians returned fire, but no Israeli soldiers were killed or injured.
After the gunfire instigated by the Israelis, the Egyptians fled back across the border, leaving the one man who was killed.
Although Israeli officials claimed that the men were gun smugglers, they presented no evidence to support this claim.
