A mosque near the city of Qalqilia was desecrated Sunday morning by graffiti spraypainted in Hebrew by Israeli settlers living illegally in the area.
Othman Zamadi, a member of the Mosque, had arrived for morning prayers when he saw the settlers drive up in a car. He watched from a window in the mosque as the settlers spraypainted slogans on the mosque. The graffiti equated the Prophet Mohammad with a pig (pork is forbidden to Muslims, as it is considered unclean).
The incident has exacerbated tensions that have been high for the last several weeks due to cartoons in a Danish newspaper considered insulting to Muslims ignited a wave of protest throughout the Muslim world.
