Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses say that two members of Palestinian resistance were killed Sunday evening as Israeli forces attacked Arafat International Airport in the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the killing of the Palestinians, claiming that they attacked Israeli forces with automatic weapons inside the airport. Those killed are said to have been members of the Al Qassam Brigades, the armed resistance wing of the Hamas party.
Arafat International Airport has been officially inactive since September of 2000, when Israeli forces destroyed major parts of the airport and forced its closure. Since the recent incursions into the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military has reoccupied the airport and is currently using it as a make-shift military base.
