Palestinian Minister of Information, and the official spokesperson of the Palestinian National Unity Government, rejected a proposal of some Israeli leaders of the Meretz movement to place the Gaza Strip under the control of the Arab League, and considered the proposal as an attempt to void the unity of the Palestinian territories.Dr. Barghouthi also said that this proposal also voids the Palestinian right of independence and the establishment of a Palestinian state which enjoys geographical contiguity.

Dr. Barghouthi called on Meretz movement to act in order to end the occupation and to call for the deployment of international forces between the Palestinian State and the State of Israel “instead of making proposals that facilitate the attempts of the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, to void the option of creating an independent Palestinian State on all of the occupied territories since 1967 including occupied East Jerusalem.

He also said that this proposal is considered an attempt to void the Arab Peace Initiative which insists on the Palestinian rights of achieving independence and liberation.

Dr. Barghouthi also stated that the Palestinians will reject any proposal that would not end the occupation, and would reject any proposal that does not lead to full independence, and the Right of Return to the Palestinian refugees.
