Member of the Political Bureau of the Hamas movement, Dr. Mahmoud Zahhar, denied claims reportedly made by Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in which he claimed that Hamas planned the assassination of Nablus governor, Lieutenant Jibril al-Bakri.On Wednesday, Palestinian Security sources in Nablus, in the northern part of the West Bank announced the arrest of a cell, believed to be running under Hamas, planning to assassinate the governor, and were reportedly planning to conduct bombings in Israel
But Dr. Zahhar told the Qatar-based al-Jazeera that Hamas did not plan any assassination and that the movement’s weapons are only pointed at the Israeli occupation.
The Hamas leader stated that the rival Fatah movement of Mahmoud Abbas is trying to foil attempts aimed at reaching a Palestinian unity deal, and is ongoing with its aggression against Hamas members and supporters in the West Bank.
“Hamas members and supporters are suffering two folds; they are being targeted by the Israeli occupation, and by the security forces of Fatah”, Zahhar stated.
Meanwhile, the Nablus governor stated that a Hamas cell prepared a plan to assassinate him and to destabilize the security situation in Nablus and in the rest of the West Bank.
