The Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) announced, on Monday evening, that the Israeli prison administration carried out a new assassination against the Palestinian detainee, Abdul Rahman Bassem Al-Bahsh, 23, from Nablus, in the “Megiddo” prison.
Al-Bahsh, who was abducted on May 31, 2022 and sentenced to 35 months in prison, is the seventh Palestinian detainee in occupation prisons since October 7, 2023.
In a joint statement, the Commission and the PPS said that the “Megiddo” prison is one of the prisons that has witnessed systematic crimes and torture against prisoners since October 7, in which three prisoners were killed.
The statement added that the Israeli occupation continues, with impunity, assassinating Palestinian detainees, in addition to the systematic torture and abuse, with the intent to kill.
Testimonies conveyed by released prisoners, lawyers, and institutions regarding the assassinations of detainees since October 7, confirm that repression units and special units have tortured and brutally assaulted Palestinian detainees causing their deaths.
The statement added that the two organizations hold the Israeli occupation and all international powers who support that occupation responsible for these deaths.
The two organizations urged all international human rights institutions led by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to exert pressure by all means to stop the unprecedented crimes against prisoners in the occupation prisons.
Since 1967, the number of Palestinian detainees from the West Bank and Gaza that have died in Israeli prisons has risen to 244.
After a request submitted by the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) lawyer to open an autopsy and an immediate investigation into the death of Al-Bahsh, the occupation court in Hadera approved.
Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, seven Palestinian detainees have been killed in Israeli occupation prisons.
- October 23, 2023 – Omar Hamza Hassan Daraghmeh, 58, from Tubas, died in the “Megiddo” Prison in Israel.
- October 24, 2023 – Arafat Yasser Hamdan, 25, from Beit Sira, west of Ramallah, died in the “Ofer” detention center.
- November 6, 2023 – Majed Ahmed Zaqoul, 32, from the Gaza Strip died in “Ofer” Prison.
- Date Unknown – an unidentified detainee from the Gaza Strip died in an Israeli prison.
- November 13, 2023 – Abdul-Rahman Ahmad Mohammad Mer’ey, 33, from the town of Qarawat Bani Hassan northwest of Salfit, died in the Israeli “Megiddo” prison.
- November 19, 2023 – Thaer Samih Abu Assab, 38, from Qalqilia, died in the “Negev” Desert prison.
